Should I Cut My Own Hair?

Bad hair cuts during lockdownDid you know that your hair is only likely to grow half an inch during a whole month? Do NOT cut your own hair or ask a friend to do it, the results are likely to be disastrous – and whilst we are also in isolation, we cannot pop round to fix it for you.

Use this time as an opportunity to learn more about styling your hair. Check out some tutorial videos on how to do a professional looking blow dry at home, you’ll have plenty of time to practice!

Is your fringe growing out during isolation? Do not be tempted to cut it yourself, there is a reason our stylists are highly trained! Instead, try styling your fringe into a quiff style, braid it or twist and pin to the side.

Should I Buy a Colour For at Home?

Many shop bought box hair dyes are prone to fading quickly, and tend to look NOTHING like they do on the box. This is because they are a “one size fits all” colour which don’t take into account your base colour, natural highlights and hair condition, unlike a professional hair colour service in our award winning Edinburgh salon.

We’ve all heard the hair colour horror stories of blonde hair turning brassy or green, looking flat, dull and lifeless or becoming damaged by box dyes. If you attempt to colour your hair at home and it goes wrong, you may need a professional hair colour correction once we are open again – this will take both time and money to rectify.

It is also incredibly important to carry out a skin allergy test so that you can ensure you do not have an allergic reaction to any hair colours used, which is something we insist upon before a colour service.

Use Colour Depositing Products at Home

Davines Finest Pigments, McGills Hairdressing Salon in EdinburghIs your coloured hair in need of a bit love during this downtime? to keep your colour looking fresher for longer, we would recommend the Davines Finest Pigment range. These products come in various different colours & tones and last up to 8 washes!

Ask us about the Davines Alchemic range shampoos and conditioners. These are ideal for most hair colours, although they work best for one all over hair colour

These little pocket rockets have a small amount of direct pigment in them, each you wash your hair the colour pigment will be added back in.
We recommend using these twice a week along side your usual shampoo and conditioner.

Invest in some professional hair masques and apply these regularly to keep your hair moisturised and healthy looking alongside your refreshed colour.

Try A Root Concealer to Blend Colour

If your roots are dragging you down during isolation, why not try a growth touch-up kit which allows you to discreetly enhance, retouch or blend away greys. We would recommend the Colour Wow palette, which can be applied to dry hair and wont effect your professional hair colour.

Experiment With A Different Hair Style

When you wear your hair in the same style every day, it can look flat and your roots may look darker than they actually are. Try changing your parting to the other side, or try an eye-catching style to draw attention away from the roots. This is particularly effective on highlighted hair as your natural colour will already have grown through and you can alter the style to disguise the growth. Intricate plaits or even a half up half down bun style would be great for disguising roots.

Play Dress Up!

This isolation time may be the ideal time to get creative with your hairstyle, so pull out all of your hair accessories and play dress up! Summer is also a great time to try out headscarves, hats, as you should keep your hair protected from the harmful UV rays of the sun, which can dry out your hair and fade your hair colour. Even a simple silken scrunchie can dress up your look and make you feel fabulous!
