Go Green With McGills Hairdressing For Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October
Unfortunately everyone of us will know someone that has, or has been effected by cancer. It is a topic held close to many people for a number of personal reasons.
I am one of those people. In 2018 my mum was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and, luckily for her the treatment went well and she got the all clear in 2019. This was by far one of the most challenging times for her and us as a family. I don’t know what we would have done without the help and support of Maggie’s.
Maggie’s is a cancer support charity which was set up by a Scottish lady who went through cancer herself. She knew the world needed a place like Maggie’s and so the charity was born. Find out more about Maggie’s and the work they do HERE.
Throughout my mum’s process, one of the things that she constantly struggled with was her “new look”. This isn’t because she is vain, but because she said that it was a constant reminder that she was ill and of what her body was having to go through with no hair, a swollen face, dry skin and more.
Then we heard about Maggie’s “Look and Learn” class. This is a class where you are taught how to apply your make up differently, how to dress with your head scarf and how to boost your self confidence. The best part of this is that you are learning these things with others who are working through the same emotions and feelings as you are, in a safe community.
My mum was given a goodie bag full of various scarfs, make up and more to take away and practise with at her leisure. The goodie bags were provided by donations from kind humans beings but unfortunately, with the current restrictions this service is unavailable. However, we aren’t giving up that easily!
This year, we are “Going Green For Pink” at McGills Hairdressing!
We are asking you to help us by donating any headscarves, nail polishes and make up items for our Maggie’s raffle. Please note that due to Covid restrictions, your kind donation must be new.
We will be raffling a beauty hamper for one lucky winner in November, with all proceeds to be donated to Maggie’s at Edinburgh Hospital. In due course they will be able to restart their invaluable “Look and Learn” classes.
