Hair Loss Awareness Month
Understanding Common Hair Loss Types and How to Manage Them
Did you know that August is Hair Loss Awareness Month? In the UK, hair loss affects approximately 8 million women and 6.5 million men, yet many people still find it difficult to discuss. At McGills Hairdressing in Edinburgh, we believe it’s time to start the conversation about hair loss and how to address it.
Common Types of Hair Loss
Hair loss can be distressing, but understanding the most common types can help you take the first step towards effective management.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium is a form of diffuse hair loss that results in increased hair shedding, leading to overall thinning. It is often triggered by stress, illness, medication, or hormonal changes. If you’ve noticed more hair on your pillow or in your brush, this could be the cause.
Male or Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)
Androgenetic Alopecia is a progressive form of hair loss that affects around 50% of people. In men, it typically presents as a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, while women usually notice a widening parting and an overall reduction in hair volume.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss. This type is characterised by smooth, skin-coloured patches of hair loss on the scalp.
